This website highlights the work of the PTO with the aim of helping parents navigate their time at the school and feel connected to the school community.

Getting To School

Safety Guidelines for Drop off, Pick up and Biking to School

For the new traffic Map, click here.

The safety of our children is of continuing concern to parents and school officials.  Please observe these rules:

  • Children must cross Tower Road only with the crossing guard, located at Gordon Terrace.
  • Children must cross streets only at marked crossings.
  • Children must observe traffic lights when crossing streets.
  • Caution children never to accept rides, candy or gifts from strangers or little known "friends."

Plan a specific route to and from school that indicates sidewalks, cross walks, stop signs, stoplights.  The crossing guard always should be used.  Never take short cuts.

Children should not cut across Mann Park.

Identify the homes of friends on each block where children might stop if an emergency should arise.

“WHEEL” RULES:  3rd and 4th graders may ride their non-motorized wheeled vehicles (bikes, rollerblades, scooters and skateboards) to school.  K -– 2 children may ride bikes to school ONLY if accompanied by a parent or guardian.  Riders must observe the same rules as those for walkers (see above), as well as these additional rules:

  • Helmets and other appropriate safety gear (e.g., pads for inline skating) are required.
  • Walk, do not ride, wheeled vehicles on school grounds.
  • Children should ride on sidewalks rather than in the street and should give the pedestrian the right-of-way. Children should walk bikes, scooters, and skateboards across the street.
  • Cyclists should know and use hand signals.
  • Bicycles should be parked and locked in the racks provided (the bike corral).  Rollerblades, scooters, and skateboards must be able to be stowed completely under the cubbies in the hallway, safely out of the way of others.
  • No wheeled vehicles are allowed on Gordon Terrace south of Tower Road or on Chatfield Road in front of the school.  Bicyclists should cross Tower at Gordon Terrace, proceed east on Tower to Burr and south on Burr to the bicycle racks on the east side of the school.
  • We prefer that all bikes are registered through the Winnetka Police Department.

2nd graders will be given a take-home bicycle test and inspection sheet in the spring; upon completion of these, they may ride wheeled, non-motorized vehicles to school.

BUS CHILDREN:  Kindergartners should ride in the front of the bus whenever possible.  A permission slip should be brought to school by children who will be riding to another child's home on the bus.  If a bus rider is to walk to another child's home, the bus rider should have a note to that effect.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP OF CHILDREN:  Children must be dropped off and picked up only in designated areas- never at crosswalks or intersections.  If you drive to school, be prepared to wait in pick-up lines.  Patience and cooperation are required!

Some rules are:
GENERAL: (Click here for traffic map.)
Drop-off and pick-up areas are alphabetical, by last name, for Grades 1-- 4:

A-– L  Please pick-up/drop-off your child on Chatfield in front of the school;  M-– Z  Please pick-up/drop-off your child at the south end of the school near the “muscleman” play area.  Kindergarten students have different pick-up procedures than older students.  Please see below for details on each pick up area.

  • Drivers using the drop-off and pick-up zones must not park or leave their cars at any time.  Cars should pull forward in line as far as possible before letting children in or out.  Children will be instructed to wait on the sidewalk and watch for their car to pull forward in the line.  If you’ve been waiting at the front of the line and your child is not out of the building yet, you may be asked to circle around the block and re-enter the queue.
  • Do NOT park or stop to drop off or pick up children at the sidewalk or handicap parking spot at the corner of Chatfield Road and Burr Road.  Stopping at this corner creates a hazard for the children crossing the street and a major traffic jam in the intersection.
  • Do NOT double-park.  All streets around school need to be kept clear to maintain optimum traffic flow and maintain safe conditions for all children.
  • Parking around the school is limited.  Please plan to park on neighboring streets 1--2 blocks away from school.  Village parking regulations and signs should be obeyed at all times.
  • Crossing Guards are on duty during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up to help children cross safely.  Please respect their role in keeping all children safe as they arrive and leave school.
  • After 3:25 p.m. (2:55 p.m. on Mondays) all children who have not been picked up will be escorted to the front entrance to wait in the building.

Delayed dismissal due to weather:
In unusual cases, when severe weather is present at dismissal times, the school will hold the children in school until a safe time.  This is generally a wait of a few minutes and  parents and caregivers simply need to wait patiently as the inclement weather passes.  If there is something more extraordinary, we will notify families immediately about alternative dismissal plans via the group-phone call emergency notification system.

KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS

  • We prefer that kindergarten students be dropped off only at the Kindergarten Turnaround (on the far west side of the school).
  •
  •  All kindergarteners are picked up at the Kindergarten Turnaround (on the far west side of the school). Kindergarten pick up times are 11:25 a.m. (11:10 a.m. on Mondays) and 3:15 p.m. (2:45 p.m. on Mondays).
  • ONLY kindergarteners may be dropped off or picked up at the Kindergarten Turnaround--this location is not for older children until after 3:15 p.m.
  • Kindergarten parents are asked to pick up their kindergarten child first and then to proceed to Chatfield or Laurel to pick up older children.
  • Parking in the Kindergarten Turnaround is prohibited at all times

FRONT OF SCHOOL-CHATFIELD

Grades 1-4:  If your last name begins with A--L, please use the Chatfield entrance at the front of the school.  Children may be dropped off in front of the school in the morning (8:25 a.m.) and after lunch at 12:20 p.m. (Mondays at 12:05 p.m.).  Children may picked up for lunch at 11:30 a.m.  (Monday lunch pick up at 11:10 a.m.) and 3:20 p.m. (2:50 p.m. on Mondays) for afternoon pick up.  We ask that you have your children ready to get out of the car in order to keep traffic moving.

  • Cars should pull forward to the front doors (at the cut out space) before letting children in or out.
  • If your child is not waiting, you are asked to circle around the block and re-enter the queue in order to keep traffic flowing.
  • During school hours, the cut-out space in front of the school on Chatfield is for the exclusive use of the District delivery van.

BACK OF SCHOOL-MUSCLEMAN

Grades 1-4:  if your last name begins with M--Z, please drop off/pick up your child at the south end of the school beside the “muscleman” play area on Laurel.

  • The pick-up zone begins on Laurel at the far side of the playing field and continues along the field to the muscleman.  Once cars have filled the spaces back to the fire hydrant, cars must wait along the south side of Mann Park.  This is necessary to keep the cross walk and bus zone clear.
  • Cars should pull as far forward in line as possible before letting children in or out.
  • If your child is not waiting, you are asked to circle around the block and re-enter the queue in order to keep traffic flowing.

Do not double park along the line or wave your child across the street.  At no time are students to cross the street or cross between waiting cars to enter their car.
