Trash Free Tuesdays

Every Tuesday at Hubbard Woods School (and all the District 36 Schools) is a Trash-Free Tuesday.  Trash-Free Tuesdays are an opportunity for parents, students, faculty, and staff to be mindful, conserve resources, and reduce waste.

The concept is simple. We want students to bring lunches that don’t generate any trash.  It’s a way to get us all thinking twice about how much and what we send to landfill.  It also preserves money and other resources for all concerned.

Here are a few easy ways to go Trash-Free on Tuesdays:

  • Avoid purchasing single-serving items.  Buy in bulk when possible to reduce packaging.
  • Send lunches in a lunchbox, bento box, or reusable cloth or other bag.  (And check out the cute and sturdy cloth bags with the HWS logo on them available for $5 on the steps next to Mrs. Kuzel’s desk!)
  • Use reusable cloth or plastic containers.  Avoid plastic baggies and plastic wrap.
  • Use reusable bottles or thermoses for water, juice, soup, etc.  Avoid juice boxes, pouches, and single-serving water bottles.  (And check out the cute and sturdy reusable bottles with the HWS logo on them available as part of this year’s Spirit Wear offerings!)
  • Send your child with a cloth napkin and silverware to take home and wash rather than add to landfill.

Don’t stop at Tuesdays – challenge yourself and your child to pack a Trash-Free lunch every day!

Here are a few options for reusable containers:  Lunchskins, Pottery Barn Kids Stainless Food Containers, Rubbermaid, The Container Store, most grocery and drug stores!
